About the museum
East Iceland Heritage Museum is based in a relatively new building in Egilsstaðir and is run by three municipalities. The museum was founded in 1943 and was finally moved to a permanent location in 1995. Its collection consists of approximately 13,000 artifacts, mostly things connected to the everyday life of the people in the east during the past two centuries, but also some older earthfound artifacts from the Middle Ages.
East Iceland Heritage Museum has a main exhibition which stands with some changes from year to year. It also offers smaller or special exhibitions during the summer time and connected to holidays or special events in Egilsstaðir.
The museum also has a growing educational program for school groups, both young and old, as well as specially tailored visits for business groups and other interested groups.
