ABOUT THE MUSEUM East Iceland Heritage Museum is based in a relatively new house in Egilsstaðir and is run by three municipalities. It was founded in 1943 but didn´t get a permanent accomodation before 1995. It has around 10.000 artifacts in it´s collection, mostly things connected with the everyday life of people in the east from the last two centuries but also some older earthfound artifacts from the Middle Ages. Staff:
EXHIBITIONS The main exhibition is called "The countryside and the village" and is divided into two main parts. The first one gives an insight into the everyday-life in rural Iceland in the late 19th and early 20th century. The second part is dedicated to the growth of the village in Egilsstaðir and how the community changed from being farming based to depending more and more on commerce, service and industry. We also put up special exhibition at least once a year. During the year 2010 we continue to exhibit with artifacts from Skriðuklaustur, a monestary from the end of the 15th century.
EDUCATION Museum education is a great way of learning and for school students it is often a good relief from traditional school room lessons. Our museum education program has been expanding and we proudly offer increasing opportunities for student groups of all ages as well as specially tailored guide if requested.
